'Justice League' Review

10:48

Directed by Zack Snyder
Starring: Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher, Henry Cavill

So we get into the cinema and the film starts playing. It looks very odd, the aspect ratio, but I think nothing of it. The opening scene starts playing, with Batman luring out a Parademon using a thug's fear - and the screen seems so messy. It's zoomed in, and it's stupidly distracting. Seeing Ben Affleck's big chin makes it feel like I'm in a 3D screening as it gets annoyingly close to my face, so we complain after we realise the projector has zoomed in too far. But we never noticed it go back to the normal resolution, because of how glaringly obnoxious the film, it's editing, it's action and just the look of it, really vexed us. And that's just the start of my Justice League experience.

After the death of Superman (Henry Cavill) Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) plan to put together a team of people with special abilities to fight an incoming threat with the power to destroy the world (generic of course.) They recruit the Flash (Ezra Miller) Aquaman (Jason Momoa) and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) to aid them in their quest to stop the evil Steppenwolf.

Alright where to begin with this year's Suicide Squad. Honestly, this film is trash. After years of waiting for a Justice League movie we are left with this bland, uninspired hunk of junk that was done by none other than Zack the Hack Snyder and a little help from Joss Whedon after Snyder left after a family tragedy. Thankfully you can't really tell two directors are behind the film but that's no way to bring this film back up from the mess it is in. There is nothing interesting about the plot, the look or anything. It's just absurd. The pacing is astonishingly bad, the putting together of the League is way too fast and feels ridiculous in the recruitment of Flash and Aquaman for example, as we've yet to see films of their own, so they're just pushed in without any kind of story to make us invested in them. It's a shame this film wasn't allowed to go over two hours long as it really could have done with a bit more time to spread things out.

Speaking of characters, the only good thing that holds this film up to any standard is Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman, who really should be in charge of this team. Having seen Wonder Woman this year I feel invested in her character and she genuinely seems like she's trying her best and having a good time with the crappy writing she has been given. Then there's Batman, who is portrayed so woodenly by Affleck that you can tell straight off he doesn't want to be playing the character, no wonder he wants out. The writing seem's to make him really comical too, which is horrible, and some of his lines are so badly delivered that I really don't blame Affleck's attitude. Well, I do. The Flash is played well by Miller but his writing is poor at times and some of his jokes fall awkwardly flat. He doesn't have much to do either, he seems to just save civilians or give people things with his superpower, he hardly feels interesting at all. And the same goes for Aquaman who is sidelined a whole lot in this, and considering this guy can basically control the sea and water for that matter, he doesn't do it a lot and just jumps around stabbing things. What's the point of Aquaman without the aqua? Cyborg is just rushed, his backstory is never really explained or made sense of and the CGI makes him look stupid. Fisher's performance is painful to watch, but he was never anyones favourite anyway. Then of course, you already know, Superman returns! And he doesn't have much to do. Come to think of it, none of them do. So there's your cast for you.

The actions scenes are often big messes of CGI, along with the films villain who is just CGI, and its seriously off-putting, and laughably bad. The plan is generic and so is the story, it doesn't feel like anything different but a suck up to every at least decent Marvel film there is. The editing is horrendous and some of these edits made me laugh that they were that bad. I think one of the main problems were that the film tried to be too funny, and the tone was completely off compared to Batman vs Superman, which I liked in terms of it's dark tone. The Dark Knight and Wonder Woman had dark tones and they worked fine, why can't DC stick to that? It's awful on every level, and part of me is very happy that I got a free cinema ticket at the end of the film due to the mess with the screen at the start. I basically got my money back for a film I didn't like, and you don't get that very often at all. Give this mess a miss.
