Reviewing: 'Tomb Raider'

Directed by Roar Uthaug
Starring: Alicia Vikander, Walton Goggins, Lu Ren, Dominic West, Hannah John-Kamen

Now as all of you know, I am a feminist. And I like an empowering woman to carry an adaptation of some source material that she leads very well. For Lara Croft, you'd expect a sexy, buxom and just genuinely stunning actress to take on the titular role, whilst being empowering at the same time, remember that, empowering. But, Alicia Vikander had to come along and ruin it all. Why? Because she doesn't have big enough breasts. I was sorely disappointed as a feminist going into a film about female empowerment and not being able to see a Lara Croft with big breasts! What on earth is the world coming too? And how come she looks so damn messy and dirty in this film? Did she not bring any makeup with her to make sure that she looked amazing all the time on this island? I honestly hated it. Alicia Vikander should be ashamed. Just ruined.

Alright calm the hell down, that was satire. I've seen so many people and articles complaining about Vikander and the fact she isn't busty enough or pretty enough. A film about female empowerment, focusing on an iconic female character that is globally loved should not be slated on how the actress playing her looks surely, not in this day and age at least. Honestly, Vikander is great in this film. She's quirky, feisty and with this being an origin story for her it feels appropriate. She's a very charming and strong actress who does great with what she's given. She's probably the best part of the movie.

I'm not really going to review this film in depth however. I've never properly played the games or seen the Angelina Jolie films so what I say may not be key in critiquing this film to a decent level, but as a film it's not the greatest. It is based on the 2013 reboot of the Tomb Raider games and to be fair, director Roar Uthaug does a good job of capturing the essence and visuality of those games. The story isn't great, if you've seen an Indiana Jones film you've seen this film really. It does have those Tomb Raider elements to it however but nothing special. Some of the acting is a little stale, and unfortunately Walton Goggins as good as an actor as he is isn't given enough to his character in terms of interesting writing.

The action is fine, some of the shots are fine... look, I went into this film with mixed expectations. I also went into it knowing all of this stupid crap about how Vikander looked and in the end I just felt like it was good to get out and see a movie. I've never felt like that in a while where I've just sat down and watched without properly criticising a film while I'm watching. So if you're a fan of Lara Croft, go see it. I'm sure you'll get something out of it. If you're new to the franchise, go see it, you'll probably get something out of it too. If you're going to moan about it, just don't go see it.

Either way, enjoy Tomb Raider.
