The Killmonger Dilemma

03:12

WARNING! Spoilers ahead for Black Panther, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 and Spiderman: Homecoming. If you haven't seen it, turn away now!

Alright alright, don't get your vibranium suits in a twist. I know you liked Black Panther, and I know you liked Michael B.Jordan's Erik Killmonger. He was a very fresh villain for Marvel (well, kinda, but we'll get to that) who had a fine arc and motivation for doing what he did. But I feel like he's been blown a bit out of proportion. I've seen articles with titles such as 'Killmonger is the best comic book villain since Heath Ledger's Joker!' or 'Marvel has finally solved his villain problem!' Really? Like really? I know this is all of course a matter of opinion but here are a couple of reasons why I feel as though Killmonger isn't as good as other say he is, and that he's pretty overrated.

1) There are plenty of other good Marvel villains.
Sure. I know there have been some horrendous Marvel villains, and its safe to say that they have definitely had an issue with this for a very long time. I've seen many say that Killmonger is the salvation to this issue. But I think many people are forgetting about two villains in particular from last year that were the big game changers. Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2 is a great villain who I don't think anyone expected to be the central baddie. And the reveal that he put the tumour in Peter Quill's mother's head was a shattering one, not just for Quill but for the audience as well, making him a villain that audience all around the world would hate. Then we have one of the most relatable villains from Spiderman: Homecoming, Micheal Keaton's Vulture. A man who has been pushed around his whole life by those above him, not looking to destroy the world or to kill anyone, but to sell weapons to make enough for him to get by and look after his family. Relatable and understandable to some you have to say? Sure he's a bad guy but this is very different villain to what we've had before. And then we have Loki! Is everyone forgetting about Loki? Killmonger isn't really a game changer compared to these guys right?

2) His plan was way overcomplicated.
So when we first meet Erik, he has teamed up with Ulysses Klaue to steal a vibranium weapon from a museum to sell. Erik's plan was to kill Klaue and take him to Wakanda as a peace offering. But he could have saved so much time and could have killed Klaue as soon as he met him right? The whole museum and South Korea subplot were pretty pointless and just consumed more time, why go to the extent of just wasting time, this stuff served no purpose to his plan and it feels like filler for T'Challa and the others to have a fun mission. Which yeah, it's fine, but not for Killmonger's plot. Is he dumb? Come to think of it, did you need Klaue at all? If you're the heir what would be the problem with you just showing up and claiming who you are?

3) An even bigger waste of time...
Pointed out to me by my good friend Liam Mook, is a big point that I feel could have saved Killmonger so much time and at very little effort. So T'Chakka, T'Challa's dad, killed Erik's father when he was young. So obviously Erik is an heir to the Black Panther, so why didn't he go fight T'Chakka, kill him and get revenge than fight his son so many years later? He even fought T'Challa not long after T'Chakka's death in Civil War. Were you afraid you'd be beaten by an old man? Sure you beat T'Challa but you could have saved time by actually facing your uncle, the actual guy who killed your dad, and it would have been so much easier for you. Pretty pointless.

4) Michael B.Jordan
Look. He's fine. But I feel like he was miscast. Again, a matter of opinion. But I feel like he just seems to be a kid compared to T'Challa, and I can't take him seriously. Someone like Ricky Whittle or even Daniel Kaluuya who is of course already in this film I know, would have been a better pick in my opinion. But whatever.

Ok, I know these are nitpicks. But it doesn't exactly help his character. I think he's fine, and he's definitely one of Marvel's better villains, but I don't think he's the best, and I think he's quite flawed in places. Nevertheless, that shouldn't ruin your enjoyment of the character, and I'd be interested to know what you guys have to say too! But come on, he aint no Heath Ledger Joker.
