The Problem with 'The Last Jedi'

SPOILER WARNING! Only read if you've seen TLJ or don't care for spoilers!

So, it's been a week since Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit our cinemas and it seems that the reception over the film has been controversial to say the least. Some love it to death, saying it's one of the best Star Wars films since The Empire Strikes Back. And then, some people hate it. For me, when the movie works, it works! But that's it. Other than many of the other problems that plague this film as you can read in my review, it's biggest issue is the writing. And whilst some of it is good in some places, Rian Johnson's script really has left a sour taste in my mouth, leaving us with plot-holes galore and out of continuity moments that really make this film lesser and lesser in my opinion the more I think about it. So without further ado, let's look at where the writing really crumbles.

1) The Handling of Luke Skywalker
Everyone was super excited for Mark Hamill's return as Luke Skywalker, and I'm sure Rian Johnson was, what luck it was for him to be given the chance to write the rest of this character's story for a new age of Star Wars fans.

Ugh.

What a mess. I mean, Hamill is great, for what he has been given to work with. But right from the get go, as Luke threw his father's lightsaber away, I was annoyed. You haven't seen that lightsaber since Empire, why did you throw it away? It's incredibly important, and with that, if you didn't want to be found and wanted to live in peace... why did you create the map to you in case you were needed? If you wanted to be left alone surely that map is a huge contradiction!

Then there was his death. Oh my god. Unfortunately, Luke went the coward's way out. Using the force to create a hologram to face Kylo Ren on Crait, to then die from the power needed to create that, was so pointless. It would have been amazing if Luke had gone out fighting, letting the Resistance escape as the same thing we saw in the film happened but he was actually there. If he was going to die either way why didn't he just show up in person? His X-Wing had a little cameo and I believed that maybe, he would leave the island to fight alongside the Resistance. Nope.

Also, why would Luke even think about killing his nephew, the child of his sister and best friend? That's not Luke Skywalker at all! Even Hamill hated the treatment of Luke and how negative he was, and I don't blame him.

2) So are we going to talk about Rey's 'training?'
Now we know Rey is a 'mary sue' but come on, her training was ridiculous, and glossed over so much. And what annoyed me was the fact that in her first lesson, she went straight towards the dark, which I thought would be interesting to see how that played out... but it doesn't. Despite Luke being so very afraid of this, he just goes on teaching as if it never happened. WHAT?! So you'd consider killing Ben Solo because you were worried about his seduction to the dark side, yet you let a total stranger who concerns you more with that same problem get on with it just like that? It's never brought up again and it's annoying as hell.

3) Snoke.
Don't get me wrong, I quite liked the Snoke twist, of killing him off. I assume that despite Disney's set up for where he could have gone, we'll still find out more about him very soon. But if this guy as they say is the most powerful Sith to have possibly ever lived, why on Earth is he so crap? So you didn't see that lightsaber rattling next to you at all? You could attach Rey and Kylo together from opposite ends of the galaxy to lead them into a trap but you didn't see that lightsaber coming at all? Also, if you could tap into Rey's mind how on Earth did you not find out where she was? Where Luke was? And another thing, at the end of TFA, you said you had to complete Kylo's training... where was that? And yet another thing, how come you didn't know about the First Order's ability to track ships through hyperspace? You weren't told at all despite you being the Supreme Leader? Damn.

4) The Lightsaber.
As Luke and Kylo prepare to fight on Crait, Luke whips out his father's lightsaber. WHICH REY AND KYLO JUST DESTROYED. So how does Kylo not recognise this, at all? And the thing is, this is such as easily solvable problem, if only they gave Luke his iconic green one right? Right?!

5) Why didn't Holdo tell Poe about the plan?
So Poe Dameron plans a mutiny against Laura Dern's Holdo in this film, as to him, she plans to do nothing about getting the Resistance out of their First Order jam. But she does have a plan, to secretly evacuate the Resistance to Crait, and go down with the ship herself as a sacrifice. So why didn't she just tell Poe, and stop the mutiny? While it helped Poe's character develop, it would have saved Finn and Rose's pointless subplot which in the end goes absolutely nowhere. And speaking of Poe Dameron...

6) Rey and Poe have already met?
At the end of the film, Rey and Poe introduce themselves to eachother... wait what? They've met eachother though, haven't they? When BB-8 and R2-D2 put the map together at the end of TFA, these two are in the same scene? I'm pretty sure they're in a few scenes together, they must have been introduced at some point, unless they were just ignoring eachother? Eh...

There's plenty more little tidbits that get on my nerves, but these ones are probably the biggest. It's a shame this film feels so separate because of the writing, and it's also a shame because I'm such a big fan of Rian Johnson. Let's hope he can at least get the continuity right for his upcoming new Star Wars trilogy. I'll hold my breath.
