'Rick and Morty' Review (Season 3)

09:06

Rick and Morty season 3 is impeccable. Every episode is as amazing as the last, everything is enjoyable and funny throughout and Pickle Rick is the greatest thing to hit TV. At least that's what I would say if I were like most viewers of this show, but since watching this show from the beginning of season 1, I have to say that this long awaited and highly anticipated season hasn't been all it's cracked up to usually be. It's still a fun season though, some things have changed for the better and the scale and pacing of most episodes have definitely improved over previous. What's great about this show is that Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon really come across as writers who have put this together for themselves - and everybody else loves it too.

So in this season, we see Beth and Jerry finally split up, (a relationship that has been getting on my nerves since the first episode) Summer becoming a post-apocolyptic mad woman, Morty going from un-confident to a big time stock broker, and then of course, Rick becoming a pickle. There's been some great episodes and some not to great episodes here, so I've decided to put together and order of my favourites, starting from number one.

1) Rest and Ricklaxation
2) The Ricklantis Mixup/Tales from the Citadel
3) The Rickshank Redemption
4) The Whirly Dirly Conspiracy
5) The Rickchurian Mortydate
6) Pickle Rick
7) The ABC's of Beth
8) Vindicators 3: The Return of Worldender
9) Rickmancing the Stone
10) Morty's Mindblowers

It's a bit of a mixed bag really. Number 1 gave some new perspectives on both Rick and Morty, and in particular to Morty who made me laugh throughout. As a character he's really developed over this season, starting to become more independent and not giving a care about his best friend as much. Plus this episode was edited and directed immensely well. A hilarious one without a doubt. Number 2 was unexpected, up until the last five minutes with the big twist reveal. That was put together brilliantly. The stories we saw from this episode were written great and gave us some interesting looks on our own society in comparrison. Those two are the highlights for me, and the rest of the season is great in seeing characters like Beth get the development they needed and seeing those like the President (who stars in the unexpected, but none the less great finale episode) return is a treat. I do miss Jerry, he's been in and out a lot this season and that's quite a shame - Number 4 however is a great episode for him though!

It's been a very funny season but the writing does take a tumble here and there. 'I'm Pickle Rick!' is super annoying and feels like a repeat of Tiny Rick from last season which I prefer. It almost feels like something that is there for people to laugh at when they don't really get the other jokes. Of course, that's not always the case for some - but it wasn't funny after the first time at all for me. Number 10 has its minimal moments but feels rushed and all over the place - and I didn't feel entertained at all other then the Squirrel bit. I would have much rather had Inter-dimensional Cable again, but I get the writers wanted to try something new, and kudos to them, that's fair enough!

It seems like I'm ranting quite a bit. But I do like this season. It hasn't been as great as the first two but in terms of characters and pacing - it's been a good one. Plenty of development and laughs are guaranteed and as always the animation astounds. When season 4 eventually comes, we have a lot to look forward to in terms of the progressing story seen in the background. As Beth says in the final episode, that Season 1 was more streamlined, and that's the way things will be from now on, I do sure hope that is the case.

7/10
