Bravo Disney, Bravo: The Dooming of the Han Solo Film

07:12

Welcome to Hollywood. Where so many of the greatest directors going and upcoming are given false hope, denied a sense of authority in their job and in all punished for having a personal vision for their work. Whilst this happens time and time again, I have to point this at two directors in particular who have just been fired from their upcoming film, the untitled Han Solo standalone movie from the Star Wars universe, Phil Lord and Chris Miller.

Lord and Miller are two directors in particular who have worked with one another on many projects including the popular 21 Jump Street movies and The Lego Movie. When it was reported that these two would helm the Han Solo film, I was immediately excited. Not many people at all are too fussed over this film at all as they don't feel like it necessary, but I'm pretty hopeful. A strong cast and two strong directors to helm them and bring something fresh to Star Wars would have been a great opportunity, but it seems as though Disney/LucasFilm had different ideas. Now, with only several weeks of shooting left to do, Kathleen Kennedy and Larry Kasdan have made the decision to sack the directors because they didn't approve of the artistic choices that they gave Lord and Miller full control of in the first place. Yeah, full control.

So why did they decide to do this, so late into production? Insiders say that it was due to the fact they didn't like the way the film was shot, their interactions with the cast and ultimately - the humour. The humour, of which comes with two humorous directors such as these two, that Kennedy and Kasdan should have really grasped who they were hiring beforehand if they didn't want a funny film... Lord and Miller both describe this as 'creative differences' which is something we hear far to often with these films, and as a director, with the more stories I see like this - the more it saddens me with how filmmakers don't get a say in how they want to make something they care so much about.

Studios should have the care and grace to let their directors pursue what they want to make, not interfere. The Flash has lost so many directors, (Lord and Miller being two of them ironically) because of DC/Warner wanting more control than what should be allowed. Suicide Squad was a mess due to their interference - yet Patty Jenkins did such a fantastic job with Wonder Woman since she had been left alone which begs the question: why are studios getting involved? Josh Trank had already left a former Star Wars project due to Disney and Edgar Wright's departure from Ant Man in 2014 was another case on Disney's part. What is going on?

Sadly, what's done is done. Kennedy and Kasdan have just shot themselves in the foot. Losing two talented directors which, from what I gather, were the only reason anyone wanted to see this film for is disappointing, and upsetting. Rumour has it that they may continue with Ron Howard directing the rest, which is silly as they will still have what Lord and Miller have produced already, combined with the rest which will just end up being a disjointed mess? Or maybe they'll go back and film the whole thing again. The latter is a better option. But one thing is for certain. My interest, and I'm pretty sure anyone else's in this film is dead. Anyway, the best of luck to these two, I'm sure whatever they produce next will be sensational as always.
