'The Walking Dead' Review (Season 7)

10:22

I feel like, even with the amazing source material they have, most of the time this show seems less exciting every season. And, you all know the drill now, you wouldn't be reading this review if you don't know the point of the show or what's happened, so I won't explain any of that. But, I will be spoiling some stuff, mainly from the premiere episode, so just brace yourselves. So yeah, back to my point. Is the show even still worth watching despite the negativity it got this season?

Yes, it is, but it makes you work for it. After the premiere, we expect the upcoming 'All Out War' storyline, not straight away of course but at least midway through the season. After watching the finale today it looks as though we won't getting that until season eight. So really, among some of the really good bits of the season, it's full of filler, which The Walking Dead is no stranger to. Episode Six in which we see a Tara-centered episode is interesting but doesn't do much except set up a small portion of Episode Fifteen, and we're reintroduced to Heath who doesn't get much to do. Then there is  Episode Twelve where we see Rick and Michonne on yet another scavenger run. It's just boring - at this point we want to see a little bit more in this show, especially with the introduction of Negan and the Saviours. But this show drags it out, and it's only really Episodes One, Four, Seven, Eight, Thirteen and Sixteen that are exciting/interesting. It feels very much like Season Four which had some good episodes but was mostly filler.

For what is good however, is the introduction of a larger world. It's good to see characters from the comics such as King Ezekiel, who is played very very well, and Shiva, who doesn't get much to do until the end, but is still very much welcome. Negan is the only exciting thing about this series. Jeffrey Dean Morgan's introduction of the iconic character was amazing in the last season, and he continues to dominate the screen in this one. It would be nice if he was a little bit more cursing as he is in the comics, but other than that he is grand - if we had him for long enough. AMC must be paying him by the minute, as if you actually look at it, he hardly appears. A shame really - hopefully they can step up their game with him.

The first episode of course is an adaptation of 'Something to Fear' in which Negan bashes in the heads of Glenn and Abraham. A shocking and brutal episode, that got slated quite a lot. Sure, it was dragged out into a whole episode, but that felt fine to me. For me, I needed to process it, and just jumping to another new day would have been too much. It was filmed excellently, acted brilliantly and was told very well. Some top performances from Andrew Lincoln and Lauren Cohen in particular.

Then the season's first half shows the characters adapting to their lives under Negan's rule. It gets boring really quick. It's interesting at first but shows us over and over again how moody and annoying Daryl is and the one dimensional nuisance of Michonne. Even Rick gets dull at a point, and Carl actually steps up and becomes interesting, especially in Episode Seven. There's some nice call backs to the comics that are well respected.

When Alexandria solve their issue and decide to rise up, we see them join the Hilltop and Kingdom in order to defeat the Saviours. And even that takes eight episodes to do. As always, the cast likes to big up the season to the absolute extreme but I knew it wouldn't be anything special, and it wasn't sadly. Other than the finale and the Morgan centric episode, the second half was dull as.

And that's about all I have to say. There are some good bits, some bad as bits... but mostly the show just goes back to being filler. The jumping between communicates and characters for one episode at a time really slows the show down and makes it pretty boring, which they've done before but not like this, it really needs fixing. Part of me knows that the first half of season eight will be dragged out in terms of 'All Out War' and going by my comic knowledge it won't need to. Hopefully the incompetent Scott Gimple does something about his show running skills and get's us more excited for next season because as of now, I am pumped, but not as much as I used to be.

The Good
+  Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan.
+ Nice comic book accurate episodes and scenes.
+ The first episode.
+ Getting to see an expanded world.

The Bad
- Filler, everywhere.
- Characters such as Daryl and Michonne are still boring.
- Lack of innovation for the series.
- Jumping between characters and locations slows down the show.
- Not many zombies from what I can recall...

6.5/10
